石英砂作为硅原料的核心原料在硅原料的生产和供应中起着不可替代的重要基础作用，应用于铸造、锻造、机械、冶金、热处理、钢结构、网架结构、集装箱、船舶、修造、桥梁、矿砂等领域的清砂、除锈、强化、成型、消除应力及各种型材的表面清理和涂装、电镀前的粗糙度（拉毛）预处理、石材切割、磁丸铸造，作为重型混凝土及高炉耐火材料的添加剂，以增加其耐磨性，耐高温性，抗冲刷性、静电屏蔽、防辐射、幽静的过滤罐、配重等，石英砂可用于制造玻璃，耐火材料，冶炼硅铁，冶金熔剂，陶瓷，研磨材料，铸造等方面。
石英砂提纯工艺：
工业上的石英砂原料为满足工业上的需求，可以通过选矿工艺提高其品位。主要有以下一些提纯方法：
1、擦洗脱泥--擦洗是指借助机械力和砂粒间的磨剥力来除去石英砂表面的薄膜铁、粘结及泥性杂质矿物和进一步擦碎未成单体的矿物集合体，再经分级作业达到进一步提纯石英砂的效果。目前主要有棒磨擦洗和机械擦洗。影响擦洗效果的主要因素为擦洗机的结构特点及配置形式；次要因素为擦洗时间、擦洗浓度（擦洗浓度一般以50%—60%为宜）。
2、磁选--磁选主要用于除去石英砂中的磁性矿物，如可以通过强磁性机除去赤铁矿、褐铁矿、黑云母等弱磁性矿物，而强磁性矿物如磁铁矿则可以通过弱磁选机除去。
3、浮选--浮选用于除去石英砂中的长石、云母等一些磁选无法除去的杂质，进一步提高其纯度。
4、酸浸--酸浸是利用石英不溶于酸（HF酸除外），而其它杂质矿物能被酸液溶解的特点，可以实现对石英的进一步提纯。
5、微生物浸出--微生物浸出是指利用微生物浸除石英砂颗粒表面的薄膜铁或浸染铁，这是新近发展起来的一种除铁技术。
